About the Tour:

The Genesee coal mine is located southwest of Edmonton and supports Capital Power’s Genesee Generating Station. The generating station produces almost 1,300 megawatts in the provincial energy grid and annually the mine produces 5.5 million tonnes of coal from their two open pit operations.

The mine operation is a joint venture between Capital Power and Westmoreland Coal who is the mine operator. The mine has a comprehensive reclamation program and in 2016 the areas with reclamation certificates totaled 1,085 acres or 439 hectares.

Since 2008, the mine has been working to develop reforestation protocols on reclaimed mine lands that would have normally been directed into agricultural production. Initially, the University of Alberta and now currently NAIT’s Boreal Research Institute along with Chickadee Reclamation Service have played a very active role in our reforestation initiatives. Many different tree establishment techniques have been tried and the operation are seeing significant results towards our reforestation goals.

Questions can be directed to Christine Johnson at 780-458-7787 ext. 117 or cjohnson@traceassociates.ca

ABOUT THE ALBERTA CHAPTER
Welcome to the Alberta Chapter of the Canadian Land Reclamation Association. With approximately 650 members, our chapter is a vibrant part of the reclamation movement within Alberta and includes private and corporate members alike.

Our corporate members include upstream, midstream and downstream producers in the oil and gas industry as well as a wide variety of consulting firms and contractors. We actively welcome student members from all post secondary institutions with an interest in reclamation.

Part of our ongoing initiative is to provide scholarships to deserving student members who show outstanding initiatives in the field of reclamation. In addition, we donate funds raised from our Annual Charity Golf Tournament. Our recipients for 2014 are Western Sky Land Trust (www.westernskylandtrust.ca), and the Alberta Centre for Reclamation Restoration Ecology (ACRRE, http://acrre.ualberta.ca/Home).  These two trust funds are committed to reclaiming or conserving local areas  and research, education and innovation within the province.
