During this festive time, I reflect on that definition and place it in the perspective of our families, friends and loved ones to reclaim our hopes and dreams and look toward a new year of positivity. Yours in reclamation,

March of 2020 will forever be remembered as the month the Province of Alberta shut down due to the pandemic. Thankfully, environmental services were mandated as “essential services” in the province and all of us spent the next few weeks navigating the safety concerns our industry was faced with. It was also the same month the Alberta Government announced the Site Rehabilitation Program (SRP).
Traditional reclamation of mines and other large disturbances have focused on seeding the sites with non-native agronomic grasses and legumes. However, this has been found to prevent the recovery of the sites rather than assisting the recovery so a technique that controlled erosion and promoted recovery without constraints was needed.
The Dr. Edward M. Watkin Award is named after a founding member of the Canadian Land Reclamation Association / Association Canadienne de Réhabilitation des Sites Dégradés (CLRA/ACRSD) in recognition of his significant service to furthering land reclamation in Canada.
